What is Back Pain?

Back pain is a common condition that affects people of all ages and can range from a mild, constant ache to a sudden, sharp pain that makes movement difficult. It can occur anywhere along the spine, from the neck to the lower back, and is one of the most common reasons people seek medical help or miss work. Back pain can be acute, lasting a few days to weeks, or chronic, persisting for months or even years.

Common Causes of Back Pain
  1. Muscle or Ligament Strain: Overstretching or tearing of muscles or ligaments due to heavy lifting, sudden movements, or poor posture can cause pain.

  2. Herniated or Bulging Discs: Discs act as cushions between the vertebrae in your spine. When they bulge or rupture, they can press on nerves, leading to pain.

  3. Arthritis: Osteoarthritis can affect the lower back, causing pain and stiffness. In some cases, arthritis in the spine can lead to a narrowing of the space around the spinal cord, a condition called spinal stenosis.

  4. Sciatica: Pain that radiates from the lower back down the leg, often caused by a herniated disc pressing on the sciatic nerve.

  5. Osteoporosis: Sitting or standing incorrectly, especially for long periods, can strain the back and lead to pain.

  6. Injuries: Falls, accidents, or sports-related injuries can cause damage to the spine, muscles, or ligaments, resulting in back pain.

Common Symptoms of Back Pain
  1. Dull, Aching Pain: A persistent, dull ache in the back, often localized in the lower back.

  2. Sharp or Stabbing Pain: Sudden, sharp pain that may radiate down the legs, especially if nerve involvement is present.

  3. Muscle Tightness or Stiffness: Difficulty moving or a feeling of tightness in the back, especially after rest or prolonged inactivity.

  4. Pain that Worsens with Movement: Pain that intensifies with bending, lifting, standing, or walking.

  5. Numbness or Tingling: Sensations of numbness, tingling, or weakness in the legs or feet, which can indicate nerve involvement.

  6. Limited Range of Motion: Difficulty or pain when trying to move or bend the back.
